PREVENTIVE HEALTH
MAINTENANCE
Advanced Cardiac Specialists
understands that discovering disease before it begins is as important, if not more
important, than treating established disease.
Preventive
Health Maintenance is an effective weapon in the fight against permanent disability
and death. In America, overwhelming documentation exists, showing the majority of deaths
in people under the age of 65 can be prevented through early detection and preventive
health maintenance (Reference: Guide to Clinical Services, United States Preventive
Services Task Force 1989).
Preventive Health Maintenance also plays an
important role in the early identification of debilitating disease. If diseases such as
diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers, hypertension, high cholesterol, thyroid
disease, osteoporosis, infectious diseases and others, are identified early, potential
debilitating effects can be minimized.
Early identification of disease and reversal
of disease causing behaviors have been proven to increase quality of life over the life
span and reduce the chance of chronic disease over the age of 65 (Reference: Canadian Task
Force on the Periodic Health Exam 1979).
Preventive Health Maintenance Can Be Broken
Down into Three Categories:
Primary Preventive Health Maintenance,
involves immunizations as well as education and counseling aimed at the elimination of
disease and disease causing behaviors;
Secondary Preventive Health Maintenance
involves screening exams and testing for early detection of disease. This includes
papanicolaou testing ("PAP smear"), mammograms, prostate testing, thyroid
evaluation, and other tests which include laboratory analysis and imaging analysis;
Tertiary Preventive Health Maintenance
involves limiting the personal disability of already established disease.
At Advanced Cardiac Specialists (ACS),
we practice proactive Preventive Health Maintenance that is tailored to the unique health
risks of each individual. Preventive Health Maintenance is accomplished for each and every
patient at ACS in three different ways:
Regular (annual) health screening exams;
Routine clinical care office visits;
Educational/counseling office visits.
Secondary Preventive Health Maintenance
The regular health screening office visit is used to obtain and update the
complete medical history of each and every patient with a detailed discussion regarding
each individuals personal nutritional and health habits. During this visit a
complete "head to toe" physical exam is performed along with secondary
Preventive Health Maintenance screening exams tailored to each individuals risk
profile.

Tertiary Preventive Health Maintenance
The routine clinical care office visit focuses on the "acute" or specific
problem at hand. This type of office visit also offers ample time and opportunity for the
exchange of information regarding patients health goals and risk reduction updates.
The counseling/education office visits
encourage patients to become actively involved in their health care in partnership with
their physician. They will receive information, instruction and support on topics such as
diabetes management, stress reduction, exercise and weight reduction, smoking cessation,
vitamin and nutritional supplementation and wound management. Counseling education can be
done at the time of routine clinical care office visits, or special appointments can be
made to discuss a patients specific concerns.
Advanced Cardiac Specialists cares about your
good health. Preventive Health Maintenance is only one of the many ways in which we are
able to team up with you to improve your overall quality of life.
